FOUNDER'S STORY

From the Start

In 1996, while in Mumbai, Biju Thampy was approached at a traffic signal by a young girl begging. Moved, he gave her some money—but moments later, he watched helplessly as an older beggar snatched it away. The girl paused briefly, then continued begging as if nothing had happened. That image haunted Biju. He questioned God, only to feel the question turned back on him: “Why are you allowing this?” Years passed, but the burden remained. Then in 2003, a news story shook him—a 3-year-old orphan in Mumbai was found suckling a street dog for milk. As a father himself, Biju was devastated. That moment became his turning point: What if this were my child? In February 2004, Biju, his wife Secunda, and friends Rajesh and Jose served their first Vision Rescue meal—vada pav—to street children outside Mahim Junction. Since then, Vision Rescue has served over 4 million meals and helped educate 10,700+ children in the slums of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
